debs: (Music is my boyfriend)

[personal profile] dissonant_dream talked today about having watched one of my favorite films from two years ago, Into the Wild, so I thought I'd talk about the music from that film tonight.

One of my favorite things that happened after the movie came out a few years ago was that people would come up to me while I was working behind the music counter at GRoots and say "I really love Eddie Vedder's work on the Into the Wild soundtrack; he's done other stuff right? Can you point me towards that?" My gut reaction was to say something along the lines of "Sure, c'mon, lemme play you 'Satan's Bed' or 'Do the Evolution.' You'll love it." These were not Pearl Jam listeners but most would not be dissuaded, so I'd special order them Ten or Vs or Yield and send them on their way.

No, Vedder's work on the soundtrack is not really anything like Pearl Jam, but that doesn't mean I love it any less. I think this was an inspired choice by Sean Penn as Vedder really tapped into the story and created a soundtrack that so easily captured the feel of both Krakauer's book and Penn's film. It was Vedder's music that brought me to tears during teh final sequences of the film and without it, the visual interpretation of the story wouldn't have been as powerful as it was.

I'm posting two of my favorite Vedder songs from the soundtrack because I love the theme of "Society" and the raw intensity of "The Wolf."

The thing that bums me out a little bit about the soundtrack is that they don't include any of the other great songs that appear in the film, so I'm also going to include Kaki King's "Doing the Wrong Thing", because I love that one, too.

Did I ever tell you that our dog is named after Eddie Vedder? His full name is Eddie Vedder (Our last name). This is because we got him two days after I went to see Pearl Jam at the Rose Garden and I was in loooooove. Eddie's voice is the voice of my late high school years; I was hugely into Pearl Jam as a junior and senior and while my fangirling of them has dropped off a bit in latter years, I still adore his voice.

"The Wolf" is the one I can really remember from the film. I was blown away by the visuals while it was playing and it sticks in my gut every time I hear it.

I wish they'd released the rest of the songs on a separate album, because I want all of them, too!

That's so awesome! And understandable, because his voice is awesome. Side note, I love how our vets (do yours do this too?) put your surname onto your pet, and when they call them, they say, "Callie ****" It makes me ♥

Seriously, the music worked so well in this film. I was so impressed.

Right? I hate soundtracks that are missing stuff!

UGH, I am on hold with ticketmaster and have been for 20 minutes. FLARGH.

Yeah, our vets do that. Actually, Lucy is still listed as Taboo at our vet (that was what I wanted to call her, but my roommates didn't like it, meh). I get kind of eye-rolly about it because people at daycare take it too far and they call me Eddie's Mommy which is WRONG. NO. STOP THAT.

I think all soundtracks should be required to feature ALL THE SONGS from the film. I don't care if that makes them two/three discs long. I hate having to go find that stuff out on my own. :P

But eventually you prevailed over Ticketmaster and everything was good! \o/

I like Lucy and Taboo. :) And oh, I hear what you're saying and I agree.

YES! Otherwise it isn't a soundtrack, it's a part and it's incomplete and they always miss off something I want!

WHEE!

What is up with this lame reply, sorry. ;)

My pets are my pets. Yes, they are part of my family but I did not carry them in my womb for nine months. Ugh, we're dealing with a flea infestation right now and I feel phantom-itchy all the time. Lucy is mad at us because my Mom has turned all the chairs in the dining on their sides (in preparation for thanksgiving) and Luce can't nap on them like she wants to.

they always miss off something I want

YES. And instead they give me seven or eight R&B tracks which I will NEVER LISTEN TO. I'm looking at YOU, soundtrack for Can't Hardly Wait. I've always thought that putting together movie soundtracks/being the music coordinator for a film would be the Best Job Ever. I think I would love that so much.

No replies are lame. I'm just happy to see you. :) ♥
