I'm not a big fan of what I've taken to calling nuevo-soul. Performers like Martin Sexton leave me cold (and poor Martin especially. His voice crawls under my skin in the worst nails-on-a-chalkboard way). I don't know why, it just doesn't move me. To use a word I've stolen from
dissonant_dream, it's beige. I feel nothing when I listen to it and therefore I own very little of it.
The two exceptions seem to be Ray LaMontagne and Ron Sexsmith. And I only like Ray's darker, echoier sound; I always skip the radio cut from his most recent album. Always. But Ron is another story.
The first time I heard Ron Sexsmith's music, I wasn't even listening to Ron Sexsmith. Guy Pearce performed four of his songs on the soundtrack to A Slipping Down Life, a soundtrack which I adored. And then late last year, I heard "Brandy Alexander" on a Paste compilation, and that's when I knew I had to have this disc. I haven't even listened to it the whole way through yet, but I thought some of you might enjoy it as well. For fans of Martin Sexton, Ray LaMontagne, Steve Carlson, Ryan Adams, and (to an extent) Rufus Wainwright.

Damn, I was going to upload bonus Guy Pearce sings RS, but yousendit is refusing to work right now. So, stay tuned for that I guess.

Date: 2009-04-27 09:01 am (UTC)Randomly, I bought some Bat For Lashes the other day and I really like a couple of the songs. Do you want me to send something over, or do you already have her, or aren't interested? Also I think I pre-ordered the new Tori Amos. Let me know!

Date: 2009-04-27 01:55 pm (UTC)Oooh, I'd love some Bat for Lashes! I've heard a few of her songs, but I don't own anything yet. Forgot that Tori was putting out another one. I'll be buying that one, too. ;) There are just certain artists where I have to have the CD, you know? *hugs*

Date: 2009-05-11 08:35 am (UTC)I went through a BFL phase and listened a bunch, then I went back to Tegan & Sara. I think I'll be getting the new Tori soon, I'm sure it was mid-late May. And yes, I know. ;D
